What is Abdominoplasty?

Abdominoplasty, commonly known as a "tummy tuck," is a major cosmetic surgical procedure that removes excess skin and fat from the middle and lower abdomen, and tightens the muscles of the abdominal wall. It is especially helpful for people who have recently lost significant weight or women who have had multiple pregnancies and are struggling with stubborn loose skin, stretch marks, and weakened abdominal muscles.

What Does It Correct?

  • Excess loose, sagging abdominal skin
  • Stretch marks (in some cases)
  • Separated abdominal muscles (diastasis recti)
  • Stubborn fat deposits in the belly
  • Protruding or loose "apron" of skin
  • Post-pregnancy belly bulge

Who is a Good Candidate?

  • Adults with excess abdominal skin after weight loss
  • Women post-pregnancy with belly concerns
  • Those with weakened abdominal muscles
  • Non-smokers in good physical health
  • Stable weight maintained for 6+ months
  • Not planning future pregnancies

The Procedure

01

Pre-Operative Preparation

Laboratory tests, medication adjustments, and stopping smoking. The surgeon marks incision lines, discusses the extent of skin removal, and plans for any additional liposuction if needed.

02

General Anesthesia

Performed under general anesthesia. The procedure typically takes 2–5 hours depending on the extent of surgery (mini vs full abdominoplasty).

03

Skin & Muscle Repair

A horizontal incision is made from hip to hip above the pubic area. Separated muscles are sutured together, excess fat is removed, and the remaining skin is stretched downward and closed. The navel is repositioned if needed.

04

Recovery

Recovery takes 2–6 weeks. A compression garment is worn for 6 weeks. Drains may be placed temporarily to remove excess fluid. Light walking is encouraged from day one, heavy lifting avoided for 6 weeks.

Benefits

Flat, firm, contoured abdomen
Repaired separated abdominal muscles
Reduced post-pregnancy belly bulge
Elimination of stretch marks (in treated areas)
Improved core strength and posture
Enhanced body confidence and clothing fit
