Breast reduction (reduction mammaplasty) is a procedure that removes excess breast fat, glandular tissue, and skin to achieve a breast size in proportion with your body, relieving discomfort associated with overly large breasts (macromastia). It alleviates neck pain, back pain, shoulder grooving from bra straps, skin rashes under the breasts, and difficulty participating in physical activities. It simultaneously lifts and reshapes the breast for improved aesthetics.
Medical evaluation, imaging (mammogram in some cases), and detailed planning of the desired breast size. Medications are adjusted as needed before surgery.
Performed under general anesthesia. The surgery typically takes 3–5 hours depending on the amount of tissue removed.
Incisions are made around the areola, vertically down to the breast crease, and along the crease. Excess fat, skin, and glandular tissue are removed. The nipple and areola are repositioned and the remaining breast tissue reshaped.
A surgical bra is worn for 4–6 weeks. Most patients return to desk work within 2 weeks, with full recovery in 4–6 weeks. Relief from physical symptoms is felt almost immediately.
