Blepharoplasty is a cosmetic surgical procedure to repair droopy eyelids by removing excess skin, muscle, and sometimes fat. Drooping eyelids are a natural part of aging — as you age, the eyelids stretch and the muscles supporting them weaken, causing excess skin and fat to accumulate above and below your eyelids. Besides giving you a tired or older appearance, severely drooping eyelids can reduce your side vision (peripheral vision), especially the upper and outer portions.
A complete eye examination, visual field test, and medical history review are conducted. Photographs are taken for surgical planning. Blood-thinning medications are stopped before surgery.
Typically performed under local anesthesia with IV sedation as an outpatient procedure. General anesthesia can be used for combined procedures. Surgery takes 1–3 hours.
For upper lids, incisions are made in the natural crease. For lower lids, incisions are inside the lower lid or just below the lash line. Excess skin, muscle, and fat are removed or redistributed.
Cool compresses and eye drops help with swelling. Most patients resume reading and screen use within 7–10 days. Final results are visible within 4–6 weeks as swelling fully resolves.
